New Director of Computing appointed

Dr Adrian Wander has been appointed as ECMWF’s new Director of Computing. His appointment will take effect on 3 March.

Commenting on his appointment, Prof Wander said:

I am delighted to be joining ECMWF at such a crucial time. The Centre is known worldwide for its excellence in weather forecasting and I am excited by the opportunity to contribute to  the continued development of its activities. I am greatly looking forward to ensuring that ECMWF continues to benefit from the best in high performance computing both now and in the future.’

Dr Adrian Wander is currently the Director of the Scientific Computing Department of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in the UK and is responsible for the development of strategic interactions with industry, academia, research councils and international laboratories (across Europe and with the US), for the setting of strategy, and for day to day management. Adrian’s department manages and delivers a number of business-critical production services including a number of computer systems such as Blue Joule (number 23rd in the Top500 list), various data stores such as the UK's Large Hadron Collider Tier 1 data store, one of the largest GPGPU installation in the UK, and various visualisation systems. The range of systems that operate from his department includes compute, storage, and networks for very large data volumes. His department currently stores over 20Pb of unique data.

ECMWF’s Director General, Professor Alan Thorpe said:

His expertise and leadership will help us to exploit these opportunities so that we have the computing capacity that is essential for us to further improve the skill of our weather predictions.’
