  Here we present an overview of small-scale ice-ocean-wave processes relevant for coupled environmental prediction. Particular examples are taken from global and regional Canadian coupled atmosphere-ice-ocean forecasting systems. These cases demonstrate the importance of coupling for ice infested seas even for short lead times. Key challenges and lessons learnt thus far are discussed.</p>
