Applications of ERA-40 re-analysis data (Overview)

The following pages summarise the results of an extensive internet search for applications of ERA-40 re-analysis data. The web hits were categorised into research areas and timescales of forecasts according to the overview given below. After clicking a box on the scheme, you will be forwarded to a table with projects applying ERA-40 data in the specified research area. The title or project name is given for each web hit (for many entries a short description can be found in italics) together with a link to the location where the information was found in November 2004 (the links were updated on 15/07/05).

The ultimate goal of the presented survey is to cover all areas of applications of ERA-40 re-analysis data. The list is by no means considered to be complete at the current stage and we invite ERA-40 users to contribute to our database (user feedback is highlighted with violet ink). Nevertheless, the survey successfully demonstrates that just two years after release of the ERA-40 re-analysis, the data is already applied in a broad spectrum of areas and by a large number of researchers from all over the world, including several users from developing countries.

Results and implications of the ERA-40 survey are discussed in the article "A preliminary survey of ERA-40 users developing applications of relevance to GEO (Group on Earth Observations)" published in the ECMWF Newsletter No. 104.
