PRISM

ECMWF is a participant in the PRogram for Integrated Earth System Modelling (PRISM) project funded by the European Union.

Project aim

An Infrastructure Project for Climate Research in Europe and a Research Project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programe and contributing to the implementation of the Key Action "To understand, detect, assess and predict global climate change processes" within the Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development

Contract no: EVR1-CT2001-40012

ECMWF's involvement

The primary challenges in the project are :
  • Technical: To provide an infrastructure that allows for remote configuration, submission and control of climate model experiments.
  • Scientific:Standardise model components to allow coupling of interchangeable model components, eg. atmosphere, ocean, biosphere, chemistry etc., that exchanges data in one experiment.

ECMWF is contributing to the technical development of an infrastructure based on the experiences of the DAWN (Distributed Applications over Wide area Networks) project, see the newsletter article "TEN-34 and DAWN", pp.10-13). In particular, it involves the enhancement of the configuration tool PrepIFS, used by the researchers at ECMWF for submitting their model experiments. ECMWF has also licenced its scheduling manager SMS for use in running the PRISM models at the PRISM sites.

The project has now completed and the resulting software is available as a CD

Further information on the PRISM project and its activities are available from the PRISM site (External links in a new window):

Contact point at ECMWF is Dr. M. Miller.
