The ocean NetCDF files need to follow the CF
metadata convention as described in the metadata and standard names documents (you can also have a quick look at the table with standard and short names).
Some preliminary examples of NetCDF files can be obtained from ECFS at ec:/ENSEMBLES/ecmf/an/0001/003/001/*nc for the ECMWF System 3 analyses and from els ec:/nep/ENSEMBLES/archiving/ocean/forecasts/1004/*nc for the ECMWF Stream 1 seasonal and annual hindcasts. Note that these files include a dimension to identify the members of the ensembles of simulations following the convention that has been developed for multi-forecast systems.
A general purpose IDL script to prepare these files created by Alberto Troccoli is available upon request.
