Conventions for Ocean Archiving: ECFS Directory Structure

MARS is not able to handle NetCDF files, so the ocean fields have to be stored in ECFS. The files should be archived in the ENSEMBLES filesystem ec:/ENSEMBLES. The proposed tree structure is the following:

ec:/ENSEMBLES/ORIG/TY/EXPV/SYS/MET/filename.nc

For example ec:/ENSEMBLES/ecmf/fc/1004/001/001/filename.nc is for the ECMWF Stream 1 seasonal and annual hindcasts, where:

  • ORIG (4 characters): originating centre as appears in the MARS tree

    ecmf: ECMWF
    egrr: Met Office
    lfpw: Météofrance
    crfc: CERFACS
    ifmk: IfM
    ingv: INGV

Perturbed-parameter ensembles have different method numbers. This means that a file containing all the ensemble members of a perturbed-parameter experiment will not have a unique method, so the tree structure should stop at the system number.
