Description
: - period supported - 1 July 1992 to current date;
- fields
are uninitialised analyses for 0000 UTC, 0600 UTC, 1200 UTC and 1800 UTC each
day;
- each parameter is stored as a field of grid point values, in latitude
rows starting at the north and working southwards; within each row values run
from west to east;
- data are stored in FM 92 GRIB using sufficient bits
to ensure that the values represented can be retrieved to an accuracy consistent
with the analysis method used;
The changes to this
data set are as follows:
|
1 July 1992 |
Data is represented on a 0.5° latitude/longitude grid
The area is 46.0° N to 30.0° N, 6.0° W to 36.0° E
Fields available are significant wave height, mean wave direction, peak period
of 1D spectra, mean wave period
30 July 1992 |
Fields added are coefficient of drag with waves, significant
height of wind waves, mean direction of wind waves, mean period of wind waves,
significant height of primary swell, mean direction of primary swell, mean period
of primary swell | |
20 June 1995 |
Data is represented
on a 0.25° latitude/longitude grid The area is 66.0°
N to 30.0° N, 6.0° W to 42.0° E
7 May 1996 |
Field added is mean square slope of waves |
|
26 October 1998 |
Field added is 10 metre wind speed.
Field added is 2-D
wave spectra which is produced four times per day. Note that proper interpolation
is not carried out for this field. Interpolated values are just those from the
nearest archive data point.
27 October 1998 |
The area is 81.0° N to 9.0° N, 98.0° W to 42.0°
E | |
13 July 1999 |
Fields added are altimeter wave height, altimeter corrected
wave height, altimeter range relative correction.
27 June 2000 |
Fields added are mean wave period first moment, mean wave period
second moment, wave spectral directional width, mean wave period first moment
wind waves, mean wave period second moment wind waves, wave spectral directional
width wind waves, mean wave period first moment for swell, mean wave period second
moment for swell, wave spectral directional width for swell | | 7
October 2003 | Fields added are wave surface kurtosis,
Benjamin-Feir index, wave spectral peakedness. |
Warning : |
There has been a problem with the wave analysis since
the introduction of ERS data on 15 August 1993. The size of waves of low magnitude
(less than 1 meter) may be too high and the corresponding mean periods too high. This
problem is largely confined to enclosed or semi-enclosed seas such as the Mediterranean
Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the East China Sea. A
correction for this problem was introduced on 14
