Seasonal Forecast Surface Monthly Data Set

This part includes a brief description and the order forms of this specific Data Set.

General information:

  • The monthly mean of each member of an ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 1987 onward;
  • The standard deviation of the monthly mean of each member of an ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 1987 onward;
  • The monthly maximum of each member of an ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 1987 onward;
  • The monthly minimum of each member of an ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 1987 onward;
  • The monthly mean of the whole ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 2002 onward;
  • The anomaly corrected monthly mean of each member of an ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 2002 onward;
  • The anomaly corrected monthly mean of the whole ensemble of forecasts from 0000 UTC on the first day of each month for months 1 to 6 from 2002 onward;
  • The months are the six calendar months for each forecast;

Description :

  • The archive consists of two parts which are a hindcast archive from 1987 to 2001 and a current archive from 2002 onward;
  • The hindcast archive for 1987 to 2000 has 5 ensemble members for each month except May and November when there are 41 ensemble members; in 2001 there are 5 ensemble members for January to April, June and July, 41 ensemble members for May and November and 40 ensemble members for August to October and December;
  • The current archive (2002 onward) has 40 ensemble members for each month;
  • Each value at each level is stored as a field of grid point values on a reduced N48 Gaussian grid;
  • Data are stored in FM 92 GRIB using sufficient bits to ensure that the values represented can be retrieved to an accuracy consistent with the analysis method used;
  • The units for all accumulating fields are rate of accumulation per second;

Fields available:

Fields available for ensemble member monthly means and standard deviations plus the monthly maximum of each member of the ensemble are:

10 metre scalar windspeed, 10 metre u and v wind components, 2 metre temperature, 2 metre dewpoint temperature, convective precipitation, East/West surface stress, evaporation, large scale precipitation, maximum temperature at 2 metres since previous post-processing, mean sea level pressure, minimum temperature at 2 metres since previous post-processing, North/South surface stress, snow depth, snowfall, soil temperature levels 1 and 2, sunshine duration, surface latent heat flux, surface sensible heat flux, surface solar radiation, surface solar radiation downward, surface thermal radiation, surface thermal radiation downward, top solar radiation, top thermal radiation, total cloud cover, total precipitation, volumetric soil wetness levels 1, 2, 3 and 4, wind gust at 10 metres;

convective precipitation, large scale precipitation, snowfall, total precipitation are not present in the forecast minimum of each ensemble member data set

Fields available for ensemble monthly mean and the anomaly corrected monthly means are:

10 metre u and v wind components, 2 metre temperature, 2 metre dewpoint temperature, maximum temperature at 2 metres since previous post-processing, mean sea level pressure, minimum temperature at 2 metres since previous post-processing, snow depth, soil temperature level 1, surface solar radiation downward, total cloud cover, total precipitation, volumetric soil wetness levels 1, 2, 3 and 4;
