Differences between MARS archiving of the current and VarEPS-monthly EFI

This page is intended to help users adapt their data retrieval and data processing programs to the revised Extreme Forecast Index production used in the new VarEPS-Monthly unified forecast system. The main differences between the present and the new system are:

  • Different model climate (see also EFI Climate).

  • EFI for instantaneous times have been replaced by EFI over a period, harmonising the forecast range for all parameters.

24-hourly forecast periods are used in the first 5 days. EFI for instantaneous time steps are not computed anymore.

The following tables list the MARS related characteristics of the currently available EFI products (column “Current”) and the replaced EFI products from the new system (column “VarEPS”).

For description of the changes regarding the GRIB header for the EFI fields see local GRIB definition 19.

Please note that analogue changes will also become necessary in the dissemination requirements, which will be applied by ECMWF on the day of the implementation.
