Guidelines for applications

Courses on Numerical Weather Prediction and Use of Products, 2010

Member States and Co-operating States

Nominations to attend any course must be submitted through the relevant National Meteorological Service using ECMWF’s application forms. Additional application forms are available either from the National Meteorological Services or direct from ECMWF.

Applications from universities or similar institutions within the Member States and Co-operating States must be channelled through, and supported by, the National Meteorological Service. A copy of the application form should also be sent direct to ECMWF.

International Organizations

Applicants from International Organizations should apply direct to ECMWF. For these organizations course fees are payable (for details please contact course organizers, address below). Because of pressure of space in some modules not all applications may be honoured.

Other States

For the course on Use of Computing Facilities, applications from Other States are not accepted unless they are sponsored by a Member State or Co-operating State, in which case the above application procedure applies.

Member States may also nominate students from Other States for the other courses. In addition, other States may propose candidates directly for the courses on Use and Interpretation of ECMWF Products and Numerical Weather Prediction. For non-Member state students course fees are payable. A statement about which institution will be responsible for paying the course fees must be submitted with the application. If funding is applied for from WMO the application must be channelled through the Secretary-General of WMO.

Following the closing date for nominations, the Centre will allocate any remaining places to suitable candidates from Other States once all requests from Member States and Co-operating States have been met.

Member States of WMO

For the course module “Use and interpretation of ECMWF products in WMO National Meteorological and Hydrological Services”, applicants from WMO Member Countries will not be charged course fees. Applications should be sent to ECMWF directly. Also applicants from WMO Member States can apply for financial assistance towards travel and subsistence. Requests for such support must be submitted to ECMWF together with the course application.

Restrictions for courses on “Use of Computing Facilities” and “Use and Interpretation of ECMWF Products”

There will be a maximum of 24 Member State and Co-operating State participants per module. If the number of applicants exceeds the maximum that can be handled, the Centre will use the following criteria in choosing participants to attend:

  • one participant per Member State or Co-operating State;
  • then a second participant from any Member State or Co-operating State, in the order of date of receipt of application.

Travel reimbursement

Funding is available for reimbursement of travel expenses for one student per Member State attending either the course on “Use and Interpretation of ECMWF Products” or one or more modules of the “Numerical Weather Prediction” course. Application for funding must be made on the application form and endorsed by the National Meteorological Centre.

The Centre does not charge any course fees, nor does it pay any travel or accommodation expenses for the course on “Use of Computing Facilities”.

Deadline for applications

Applications should arrive at the Centre at the following dates:

  • Use of ECMWF Products course Friday, 11 December 2009
  • NWP course Friday, 26 February 2010
  • Use of products for WMO Members Monday 31 May 2010
