Environment:

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 32 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. Main duties:

This post is in the Web Group in the Servers and Desktops Section of the Computer Division. The Web Group is a small team responsible for the end-to-end development, operational support and management of all aspects of ECMWF web services, both internal and external. The team’s current main project is the development of a new, state-of-the-art, end-to-end web infrastructure for operational, on-demand provision of meteorological forecast products to both web browsers and GIS clients, over the Internet.

The main duties of the post include:

  • Developing robust web interfaces and web applications
  • Supporting existing web interfaces, web applications, web authoring tools, web platforms and hardware
  • Providing day-to-day support, including 24-hour on-call support for operational services

Qualifications:

A university education to degree standard or equivalent is required, coupled with at least three years of relevant professional experience.


The successful candidate should have significant experience in the development of robust web interfaces and web applications, preferably in an operational Linux environment. ECMWF’s current web software developments require a thorough knowledge of JavaScript and Python.
In addition, experience in or knowledge of some of the following technologies would be a distinct advantage:, Java, Perl, SOA. Familiarity with web content management systems is considered beneficial, as is some experience in system administration and/or database management (e.g. PostgreSQL) .Web development experience within meteorology or other scientific disciplines would also be an advantage.


The successful candidate should be proactive, methodical, have good analytical skills and be able to demonstrate an ability to progress multiple tasks to completion and solve problems under pressure. The ability to work independently, taking initiative when required, and also to work with other developers as part of a larger team is essential.


A high level of professional skills is expected, but in acknowledging the diverse nature of the work, ECMWF will provide training where necessary.

The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German.  Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have a good knowledge of one of the other working languages of ECMWF.  Interviews will be conducted in English.

Remuneration:

Typically within the range of £3,795.00 to £5,255.00 per month net of tax, depending upon qualifications, experience, personal situation and eligibility for expatriation allowance. A deduction of either £33.62 per beneficiary or 4.38% of the monthly remuneration will be made for the supplementary health insurance scheme.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Length of contract: Two years, with the possibility of further extension.
