Bilingual French/English Secretary/Assistant

Environment:

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 32 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts, as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. Main duties:

The post is located in the Administration Department of ECMWF and forms an integrated part of a small team providing secretarial and clerical support to the various Sections within the Department.  The main duties of this post are:

  • To assist the ECMWF Translator in the preparation and completion of documents in French
  • To provide secretarial and administrative assistance to the Project Officer, the Head of Finance and the Senior Contract Officer/Legal Adviser

Qualifications:

Good standard of secondary education and a secretarial qualification, together with some experience in work of a similar nature. Experience in word-processing (MS-Word or similar) is essential, together with the willingness to learn new programmes. Competency in MS-Excel, Adobe, web publishing software and MS-Powerpoint and knowledge of a translation software such as Trados or Wordfast would be advantageous. The selected candidate should be able to work under pressure, adapt to changing work requirements and be able to integrate into a small team of international staff.

As this person will primarily be assigned to the Translator for French, the successful candidate should preferably be of French mother tongue and have an excellent command of written French. Fluency in English is also essential and some knowledge of German would be desirable.

Staff are normally recruited from among the nationals of the Member States and the following Co-operating States: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Remuneration:

B3: £2,401.99 to £3,194.99 basic salary per month net of tax. 

In principle, a staff member will be engaged at the lowest step of the grade of the post for which he or she is selected.

A deduction will be made from the basic salary for the Pension Scheme and for Partial Invalidity (currently 8.8% for the Pension Scheme and rising to 10.8% with effect from 1 January 2011 and 0.2% for Partial Invalidity).  A further 1.46% of basic salary and related allowances is currently deducted for the Centre’s Supplementary Health Insurance Scheme.

Where applicable: household allowance of 6% of basic salary; children’s allowance of £214.41 per child per month; expatriation allowance of 14% or 18% of basic salary for expatriates; education allowance for children of expatriates will be added

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Length of contract: Maximum of 4 years for initial contract, with the possibility of renewal.
