Environment:

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 32 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts, as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. Main duties:

The vacancy is in the Meteorological Applications Sections in the Operations Department of ECMWF.
The consultant will mainly work on the European Flood Alert System (EFAS) project which is a European Commission initiative to increase preparedness for riverine floods across Europe by utilizing medium-range atmospheric Ensemble Predictions. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the Research Department. ECMWF is a core provider of the inputs to EFAS and has the aspiration to run the EFAS model operationally.
The main duties comprise:

  • Integrate an EFAS prototype into the operational environment of ECMWF
  • Perform and validate test runs of EFAS
  • Establish acquisition and processing of input data sets
  • Support the archiving of EFAS inputs and outputs
  • Carry out benchmarks and improve the technical performance of EFAS
  • Participate in the on-call support of the Section
Qualifications:

A university education or equivalent is required, together with at least two years’ experience in the development and maintenance of computer applications in a scientific environment. Experience in the processing of meteorological and/or hydrological data using C/C++ or FORTRAN would be a clear advantage. A background in Hydro-Meteorology and the use of scripting languages, such as Python, in a Unix environment is also desirable.

The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German; fluency in English is essential.

Remuneration:

Typically within the range of £3,795.00 to £5,255.00 per month net of tax, depending upon qualifications, experience, personal situation and eligibility for expatriation allowance. A higher salary range of £4,685.00 to £6,360.00 per month net of tax, may be considered for a candidate with exceptionally high qualifications and experience.

A deduction of either £33.62 per beneficiary or 4.38% of the monthly remuneration will be made for the supplementary health insurance scheme.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Length of contract: One year initially. The possibility of contract extensions is likely, subject to the long-term funding of this project.
