Project description

BALTEX, a sub-programme for GEWEX, aims at the determination of water and energy cycles over the Baltic Sea drainage area. As an important contribution to BALTEX, the meteorological services of the Member States Denmark, Finland and Sweden carry out high resolution, delayed mode data assimilation of existing and special observations over this area, using the newly developed HIRLAM 3D-Var data assimilation system. Organizing the work as an ECMWF Special Project has been highly beneficial for practical and efficient execution of the task. We therefore ask for a continuation of our Special Project, with computing resources corresponding to 20% of the estimated total, the rest to be allocated to the national resource quotas of the three Member States, in equal shares in the course of production. A permanent disk quota of 100 Mbytes for storing software is requested, in addition to 50 Gbytes of data storage capacity, needed to comfortably accommodate the contents of one DLT cassette.

For more details, please refer to the latest progress report. A Final report is not yet available.
